My mom loves laundry. Like LOVES laundry. She says it is her way of showing love and service to her family – taking something dirty and unwanted then returning it clean and folded with love ready for another adventure.
I look at laundry a little differently. Laundry is the messy death pit of unending chores that continuously hurts my back and takes up too much room on my couch every week.
Oh where do I begin? … pulling all dirty clothes from around the house from bins, beds, floors, baskets into the said “washroom” / basement / closet. Then wash loads upon loads of laundry over the course of days. Possibly repeating loads based on sniff tests (Is that the 3rd wash on that load? Dang it). Finally… getting all laundry fresh and dry and throwing it on the building couch pile.
THEN there comes the folding, endless amount of folding…
little socks,
still stained shirts,
mini Lilo and Stitch panties,
old tshirts (probably should get rid of this one),
countless hubby socks balled up,
leggings (man I love a good pair of leggings).
Then… I’m done. I have a bad habit of leaving folded clean clothes all around the house, maybe in front of closets, maybe in baskets by beds, maybe even on the couch. I did in fact put all my kids’ clothes away last night, but the parents’ clothes are still folded on the couch in a basket. I’ll get to it tonight 😉
Can you tell that I loathe laundry? That’s why I have a laundry friend, Janelle. She lives in northern Indiana and we often communicate through laundry pics – first as a huge pile, and second as neatly folded piles. And we congratulate each other on each pic. We did laundry. We folded clothes. Big bonus if we put the clothes away too!
Janelle gets my laundry loathing because she too has a strong feeling about laundry. We recently face-timed and before we even said hello, she said, “hey look at my laundry piles.” She proceeded to switch the FT angle and show me a huge pile of baskets and even more clothes all over the couch and floor. My response: “nice!!!”

Do you have a friend to congratulate you on a completed mundane task that you loathe? You may need a dishwasher friend, a clean car friend or a “I got dressed today” friend. Moms, you are not alone in your constant quest to have clean homes, cars, sinks and clothes, but golly sometimes it’s hard. Get a friend who you can send a picture of your clean living room and she’ll say: “well done!”
If you need this friend to be me, I’d be honored to cheer you on. Send me your laundry pics on Instagram: @tessacyoung.
Let’s journey together…
